Patrick Merrill
revelations
Patrick Merrill (1948-2010) was a master printmaker active in Orange and Los Angeles Counties from the 1980s to 2010. In his 40-year career, he created monumental etchings, lithographs and woodcuts, often combining processes and sheets of paper to make large 6 feet high x 6 feet wide, and 6 feet high x 12 feet wide, prints. Full of art historical and political references, his works on paper represent his own body and that of an empathetic “everyman,” an engaged citizen struggling with war and expiation while yearning for peace and transformation. His later series of “apocalypse” prints is part of the permanent collection at the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) Nicholas & Lee Begovich Gallery. Merrill’s Master of Fine Arts degree was from CSUF, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree was from California State University, Long Beach.
